Cell Phone Use During Pregnancy Linked to Behavior Friday, March 16, 2012

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale University researchers say they may have found a link between cell phone use during pregnancy and behavioral problems in children such as hyperactivity.

“We can’t extrapolate from this what level of exposure is bad, but it lays the groundwork for saying cell phone exposure can cause harm,” says Hugh S. Taylor, a professor at the Yale School of Medicine and chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility in the school’s department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences.

“If you’re pregnant, it makes sense to move your cell phone away from your abdomen when you’re not on an active call. Putting it on a desk or a table might be better,” Taylor says.

The Yale study was conducted on pregnant mice, exposing them to radiation from a cell phone placed over their cage. Taylor says the findings, published in the March 15 issue of Scientific Reports, mirror those of previous epidemiological studies conducted with people.

Those studies, Taylor explains, were sometimes dismissed by critics as being inconclusive, because other environmental factors in the pregnant women’s lives might also have contributed to behavioral disorders in their children.

“This study, in a mouse model, shows us this could indeed be cause and effect,” Taylor notes. “It probably does have implications for people.”

Gabriela Campos of New Haven, who is expecting with her third child “any day now,” says the Yale study’s findings make perfect sense to her.

“Does it scare me? Sure. It’s troubling. How much exposure is safe?” she asks. Campos has been using a Bluetooth handset to make phone calls during her pregnancy.

“No matter how careful I am, it’s still a part of our lives,” she adds. “I don’t think it’s possible to have zero exposure. So many times, if I’m running around doing errands, of course I’ll put my cell phone in my pocket.”

In the Yale study, conducted over the past two years, mice exposed to radiation as fetuses were more hyperactive, more anxious and exhibited problems with memory
These behaviors bear a resemblance to what is found in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHD, according to Taylor.

Researchers found that greater exposure to cell phone radiation led to more pronounced behavioral effects. “We did show clearly that this is dose responsive,” Taylor says.

He is also is quick to say the findings don’t mean people should give up their cell phones.

“I wouldn’t want to scare people, that’s very important,” Taylor says. “There are probably some levels of exposure that are safe. But it bears further study.”

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE USB Modem 551L Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Pros

Thin. Attractive. Pulled in the fastest 4G LTE download speeds in our tests.
Cons

Slower average upload speeds. Flimsy build. No external antenna port.
Bottom Line

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE USB Modem 551L is capable of pulling in faster download speeds on Verizon's 4G LTE network than any other modem, but it lacks some features compared to its nearest competitor.

FULL REVIEW USER REVIEWS SPECS Alex Colon
Junior Analyst, Mobile 0diggsdiggTweet
In the 39 cities that currently have it, Verizon's 4G LTE network has the fastest cellular data speeds out there. The awkwardly-named Verizon Wireless 4G LTE USB Modem 551L ($99.99-$249.99) is the latest cellular modems to tap into those blistering speeds. It even bested our Editors' Choice, the Pantech UML290 ($49.99-$249.99, 4 stars), in download speeds during several of our head-to-head speed tests. But the Novatel 551L, while excellent, isn't our latest Editors' Choice. That's because, while the 551L may be capable of pulling in the fastest 4G LTE download speeds possible, it still lacks a few features that keep it from being the ultimate cellular modem of the moment.

Design, Software and Plans
The 551L is the thinnest, sleekest 4G LTE modem so far. At 3.5 by 1.4 by .5 inches, it's still almost comically long, but it isn't quite the beast the UML290 is. But unlike the UML290, which feels solid even with its rotating antenna design, the 551L feels flimsy. The back cover jiggles when touched, and the fold out USB connector feels a bit awkward. While the hinge appears strong, I felt like I was going to break the device every time I plugged it in. The naked connection prong feels like a magnet for dust and other debris. The top right corner of the modem is home to a single, multicolored LED status light that pops up different colors depending on whether you have 3G, 4G or no connection. It doesn't have a MicroSD card slot, and unlike the UML290, there is no external antenna port.

Thankfully, the 551L works with Verizon's VZ Access Manager software for both Windows and Mac right out of the box. This is an improvement over the UML290 and the LG VL600 ($99.99-$249.99, 3.5 stars), which added Mac support after they had already been released. VZ Access Manager itself is a relatively light, no-nonsense connection manager that is much more responsive and less crash-prone than Sprint's or T-Mobile's competing products.

Verizon has 4G LTE service in 39 metro areas right now, and expects to reach more than 145 by the end of the year; outside of those zones, the UML290 works on Verizon's 3G EVDO Rev A network. Plans cost $50/month for 5 GB or $80/month for 10 GB, plus $10/GB extra on either plan.

More As a CDMA modem, the UML290 works in parts of Canada, Mexico, India, China and a few other countries, but not Europe, and roaming rates are painful: up to $20.48/MB. I wouldn't buy this modem for use outside the U.S.

Performance and Conclusions
I tested the 551L in New York City head-to-head against our current Editors' Choice, the Pantech UML290, at 12 different locations over the course of a day. I transferred files over FTP, downloaded Web pages using curl, and ran the speed tester at speedtest.net.

Overall, the two modems had nearly equal average speeds. On speedtest.net, which simulates Internet streaming, the 551L averaged 14.3Mbps down, while the UML290 averaged 13.5Mbps. The UML290 came ahead in uploads, though, with an average of 5.9Mbps up as compared to the 551L's 5.7Mbps. The FTP and Web tests were even closer, though the UML290 again had slightly higher upload speeds. Tests were so close, in fact, that when one modem came out ahead, it was the UML290 55% of the time.

I did one test in 3G mode, and the results were the same: The 551L achieved a slightly higher download speed, at 1.68Mbps down compared to the UML290's 1.18Mbps. But the UML290 had a higher upload speed, at .13Mbps up compared to the 551L's .04Mbps.

So while the 551L achieved higher download speeds than the UML290, the UML290 was just a little more solid across the board. Additionally, the first test unit I received from Novatel had connectivity issues that caused dropped connections in my testing. There were also instances in which VZ Access Manager told me that I was connected to the modem, yet I was unable to connect to the Web. After speaking with Novatel, they sent me a new modem that worked just fine, so the problem was likely specific to that particular device.

After having seen and tested all three of Verizon's 4G LTE modems, it looks like they all perform relatively equally. Based on that, I'm sticking with the UML290 for its more solid average performance, brawnier build, and external antenna ports.

If you're looking to show off the most impressive download speeds possible, the Novatel 551L is the cellular modem to do it with. But if you're looking for the best connection across the board, the Pantech UML290 should still be your first choice.

You may also want to take a look at the upcoming crop of Verizon LTE MiFi devices, which can connect up to five computers and phones to an ad-hoc Wi-Fi hotspot. We've tested the Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot SCH-LC11 ($99.99 - $269.99, 3.5 stars), and while it saw speeds nearly 15 percent slower than the USB modems, it's still your best bet for connecting multiple devices at once. Novatel Wireless has another hotspot coming soon, which we previewed at CES. We'll have a review of that one as soon as it comes out.

Nasdaq, D.Boerse eye shareholders in NYSE battle Tuesday, April 12, 2011

By Paritosh Bansal and Jonathan Spicer Paritosh Bansal And Jonathan Spicer – Mon Apr 11, 6:00 pm ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nasdaq OMX Group and Deutsche Boerse are wooing major NYSE Euronext shareholders, as both exchanges stand by their bids for the Big Board parent and dig in for a drawn-out battle.

Nasdaq and partner IntercontinentalExchange Inc were unbowed on Monday after NYSE Euronext's board rejected their takeover offer in favor of a lower bid from Deutsche Boerse.

Shareholders at the center of the increasingly bitter fight were bracing for a bidding war and weighing a stark choice: The short-term gain from Nasdaq's higher but probably riskier offer or leaving cash on the table for what could be a better long-term fit with Deutsche Boerse.

While Nasdaq and ICE would carve NYSE Euronext in two, the Deutsche Boerse combination would create the world's top exchange operator. The rival plans face considerable antitrust hurdles in the United States or Europe, complicating things for shareholders.

"It is really early on in this contest. There's lots of time for mischief," said Thomas Caldwell, chairman and founder of Toronto-based Caldwell Investment Management Ltd.

Nasdaq and ICE are not about to walk away from their $11.3 billion unsolicited offer, and they are working behind the scenes to persuade NYSE shareholders to pressure the exchange's directors, according to people familiar with the matter.

Deutsche Boerse, which in February struck a $10 billion friendly deal to acquire NYSE Euronext, has no plans to raise its offer, two other sources said. On Sunday, NYSE's board rejected the Nasdaq-ICE bid as "strategically unattractive, with unacceptable execution risk.

The maneuvering points to a lengthy and public fight for the parent company of the venerable New York Stock Exchange, which also runs stock and futures markets across Europe.

Some shareholders suggested Nasdaq and ICE first need to counter the NYSE board's unanimous and harshly worded rejection of its offer, before they consider raising it.

There is also a relatively steep 250 million euro ($361 million) termination fee attached to the Deutsche Boerse-NYSE Euronext plan.

"The NYSE has taken the first step, and that is casting doubt. Nasdaq has got to convince people that this combined NYSE-Nasdaq combo is going to be a real winner and a powerhouse," said Caldwell, who with the funds his firm manages holds more than $100 million in NYSE Euronext stock.

NYSE Euronext is the biggest of the takeover targets now in play as many of the world's exchanges, including the London Stock Exchange and Canada's TMX Group, look to band together.

CIRCLE APRIL 28

After the rejection, Nasdaq and ICE reaffirmed their bid and chided NYSE for not discussing it further with them.

They are now trying to influence an annual meeting on April 28 in which NYSE shareholders are set to vote on their directors, said one of the sources, who requested anonymity. They hope institutional shareholders can convince the NYSE board to talk to them about the offer.

In response, NYSE Euronext Chief Executive Duncan Niederauer and his Deutsche Boerse counterpart, Reto Francioni, are set to meet key NYSE shareholders this week to promote their plan and to specify its expected cost savings, a person familiar with the plan said.

The CEOs plan to emphasize problems with the bid from Nasdaq and ICE, including concerns over too much leverage, a listings monopoly and likely job cuts, said the source.

Niederauer -- who has not talked to his counterparts at Nasdaq and ICE since they first informed him of their offer on April 1 -- on Sunday called the bid hollow and undefined.

Though NYSE's board argued the all-share Deutsche Boerse tie-up jibes with the company's long-term plan, others argue the higher cash-and-stock bid from Nasdaq and ICE could sway shareholders focusing on a short-term gain.

"We don't think many investors will find the differences in strategic vision, financial leverage, employment targets, etc, as sufficient reasons to decline the nominally superior Nasdaq ICE offer," Macquarie analyst Edward Ditmire wrote in a note.

That offer would give NYSE Euronext's stock, options and technology businesses to Nasdaq, while ICE would get its profitable derivatives operations centered in London.

Amid the frenzy, Deutsche Boerse is preparing to file an offer document with regulator BaFin as early as Tuesday, said the two people familiar with the company's thinking.

Deutsche Boerse shares rose on Monday as investors saw the chances of a bidding war between rival suitors diminish. The stock was up 0.9 percent in Frankfurt.

NYSE Euronext shares fell 2.9 percent and Nasdaq OMX shares slipped 1.5 percent, handing back some of the big gains they made when Nasdaq announced its bid.

Conventional Underwriting Guideline Updates Friday, January 14, 2011

Conventional Underwriting Guideline Updates

The Conventional guidelines have been updated effective for loans registered on or after January 14, 2011.

Pre-Foreclosure / Short Sale / Deed-in-Lieu of Foreclosure

The chart for recovery periods after Bankruptcies, Foreclosures, and Deed-in-Lieu have been modified for ease of navigation.

Also, guidelines for the recovery period after a pre-foreclosure, short sale, or deed-in-lieu have been updated. Previously, a pre-foreclosure, short sale or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure required a recovery period of 2 years. Loans scored through Desktop Underwriter (DU) will continue to permit a 2-year recovery period for non-MI loans. Loans scored through Loan Prospector (LP) or manually underwritten require a 4-year recovery period after a deed-in-lieu, pre-foreclosure, or short sale.

If extentuating circumstances can be documented, the recovery period is 2 years with a maximum 80% LTV.

Please note that when a credit history reflects a deed-in-lieu, preforeclosure, or short sale within the previous 7 years, the transaction is limited to a purchase of a primary residence or a no cash out refinance of any occupancy. Cash out transactions are not permitted until at least 7 years after the derogatory event.

Escrows
New guidance has been added to the guidelines regarding escrow accounts. Generally, an escrow account is set up to pay taxes or insurance associated with the loan. While the escrow of homeowners insurance is not mandated, the escrow of taxes, flood insurance, and mortgage insurance (if applicable) may be required.
This new section will provide guidance for the following scenarios:
• Exceptions for escrow waivers on investment properties
• Exceptions for escrow waivers on PHH-serviced HASP loans

2011 Loan Limits Friday, December 17, 2010

High-Balance Loan Feature – Temporary Loan Limits Are in Effect Through Sept. 30, 2011
The high-cost area loan limits effective for loans originated in 2010 have been extended to apply to loans originated through September 30, 2011. Loans originated on or after October 1, 2011, will use the "permanent" high-cost area loan limits.

First Mortgage Conforming Loan Limits
The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) publishes the conforming loan limits annually that apply to all conventional mortgages that are delivered to Fannie Mae, including both the general loan limits and the high-cost area loan limits. High-cost area loan limits vary by geographic location.

The general loan limits for 2011 remain unchanged from 2010 (e.g., $417,000 for a 1-unit property in the continental U.S.).

Maximum Original Principal Balance for 2011
Units Contiguous States, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
1 $417,000 $625,500
2 $533,850 $800,775
3 $645,300 $967,950
4 $801,950 $1,202,925

FHFA publishes the loan limits on its Web site and Fannie Mae provides tools for determining applicable loan limits.

High-Cost Area Loan Limits for 2011
For loans originated on or before September 30, 2011, the "temporary" high-cost area loan limits will apply and will be the same as the 2010 high-cost area loan limits. Loans originated on or after October 1, 2011, will use the "permanent" high-cost area loan limits established by FHFA under a formula of 115% of the 2010 median home price, up to a maximum of $625,500 for a 1-unit property in the continental U.S.

During the weekend of December 11, 2010, the 2011 loan limits will be incorporated in Desktop Underwriter® (DU®) Version 8.1 and DU Version 8.2 and applied based on property address.

Note that the loan limits apply based on the original loan amount, rather than the unpaid principal balance (UPB).

High-Balance Loan Feature
For loans using the high-cost area loan limits, Fannie Mae offers the high-balance loan feature. Specific eligibility and other details for the high-balance loan feature are included in the Selling Guide and the High-Balance Loan Feature matrix.

Resources

Loan Limits by Area
Listings of loan limits by area, as determined by FHFA, are provided below. The spreadsheet provides drop-down menus to allow sorting and viewing by county, state, or MSA.

Loan Limit Geocoder
Use the Loan Limit Geocoder™ to find loan limit information for specific addresses – enter a single address or a batch file.

Because high-cost area limits remain unchanged for the immediate term, lenders should feel confident in continuing to use the 2010 tools for the time being. We will update these resources for 2011 as soon as practicable in early 2011.

What is a reverse mortgage? Saturday, December 4, 2010

Reverse mortgages are special types of home loans that allow homeowners age 62 and older to convert a portion or all of the equity they have in their homes into cash, to be used for any purpose they choose. Unlike a traditional home equity loan or second mortgage, where monthly payments have to be made, a reverse mortgage does not have to be repaid until the borrowers no longer use the home as their principal residence.

Is American Express a hard company to get an approval? Everything looks great with their rates, but I don't know if American express is good to deal with as far as the late fees and jacking up my rate later on. Anyone? http://www.checkrates.com/CreditCards/default.aspx

First Equity Card Tuesday, May 6, 2008

This company sends out lots of applications. I got about four before I signed up. Then I had a question and could not reach them because they don't publish their phone number!! Long story short, you can reach them at 1-800-334-9007. Let them know that not listing their number anywhere is total BS.

Nokia 6610 Not reliable Tuesday, May 6, 2008

To Whom May Be Concern, Last year, I just bought a brand new handphone - Nokia 6610 from on of the Singtel Shop in Orchard. After which, used about three months I need to send it down to your care centre for service due to keypad problem. Checked with your care centre people, their feedback is - "it is common, so no worries, will get it repaired and it should be okie". To be frank that I still use a plastic cover and a handphone cushion cover to protect this new phone and have never drop it till now, so I got no clue why the keypads will be so easily spoiled!! Well, after repaired, thought it should be alright, but never know that three months later it was spoiled again, this time I have to apply leave to go down to the care centre to get it repaired as it is very near Christmas!! And know what after one week plus, the keypads failed me again....either the phone I bought is already a faulty pc or the care centre people did not do a good job!!! Can you imagine that when I just want to sms a simple "HELLO" to my friend, I need to spend about more than 15mins to get it keyed out!!! All because some of the keys are not functioning/ spoiled and I will have to press so hard till my thumb is so painful to get one sms out to my friend!! What is that man!! Instead of being enjoying the convenient of owing a handphone, it is causing mental stress and and a lot of inconvenience to me!!!! It is really so frustrating and fuming to keep having the same problem again and again. A handphone should be user friendly and give convenient to the user, but instead of that I have to apply leave, worry for the repair time, my warranty expired date....it just causing me all the INCONVENIENCE AND HEADACHNE!!! So, I hope that Nokia can provide me a good reply or compensation on this issue. As all along, I have been using Nokia phone, so have always trust the user-friendly of the model and yet this time it has TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTED ME!!!!! I hope you can get back to me as soon as possible on this issue. As my warranty is going to be expired soon and I don't think I want to spend anymore money on the repair again!!! Thank you.

US Bank Rip Off Tuesday, May 6, 2008

I cried because I had no shoes...until I met a person who had no feet! That's right folks...Like many of the other folks who had been taken for a ride by US Bank, I too had been cheated of a couple of hundred bucks. After being lied to multiple times, I just gave up while being amazed at the level of deception this bank would stoop to in order to save a paltry $200. Then I came across this wrenching story (dated 13 Oct 2006): http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17322452&BRD=1719&PAG=461& dept_id=25271&rfi=6 Silas Braxton (who suffers from end-stage renal failure) and his wife Evelyn Casey-Braxton were served foreclosure papers by US Bank because...get this...US Bank lost their mortgage payment checks! An excerpt from the article: --------------------------------------- "In fact, we have a receipt to prove it," Casey-Braxton said. ( that they had paid their monthly mortage ) When the Braxtons went back to the bank to complain, they showed the clerk the receipt that proved they had paid their bills before the loan had been foreclosed on. They were stunned to hear that it didn’t matter. "They told us that anyone can (make a fake) receipt," Braxton said. "What’s the point of giving them out if they won’t honor their own receipts?" He said people at the bank made him and his wife feel like it was their fault, even though the bank had lost the checks. --------------------------------------- Let me repeat that: He said people at the bank made him and his wife feel like it was their fault, even though the bank had lost the checks. Read the article and do your own due diligence before doing business with this evil institution! Remember in the late 50s, Ford tried to save its embarrassing failure of a car by flooding magazines with ads that screamed "The Edsel is a success."? The public was not taken in by these flashy slogans. My question to those reading this review is: Will you fall hook, line and sinker for US Bank's 5 Star guarantee while they continue to hoodwink the likes of the Braxton couple? What did the Braxtons do to deserve this hell? By the way, this is not a chance happening! About two years back, I had come across another identical case of US Bank foreclosing on a property in an almost identical manner! A challenge: Find me a single bank among the nation wide chain of banks that is WORSE than US Bank! I am continually amazed at good hearted nature of the American public that pitches in to save a stranded whale or indulges in similar acts of random kindness. Do your good deed for the week. Print the above mentioned article and this review. Take it to your nearest US Bank location and give it to the customers who are unaware that they are selling their souls to the devil! Needless to say, if you have an account at the bank, close it out!!

Extra iPhone power on the go Wednesday, January 9, 2008

If you're lucky enough to have an iPhone, you may have some issue with power (ehm . . . don''t we all). Fast approaching to the market is a sophisticated power pack called The mophie Juice Pack. I predict that this will be a handy piece of gear that will be fast-adopted by the iPhone elite (sense the envy?).

The mophie Juice Pack comes fully pre-charged and ready to go straight out of the box. Simply plug in your iPhone to the fully pre-charged Juice Pack and double the time you spend rocking, talking, surfing and sending!

Major mophie Juice Pack Features:

Smart Power Management System
Your iPhone Adaptor or any iPod connector can be used to charge the Juice Pack without your iPhone or with your iPhone simultaneously.

Smart Battery Technology
Instructs the iPhone to always drain out the Juice Pack first. Simply detach the Juice Pack when you''re finished, and you still have a fully charged iPhone.

Powerful and Safe Battery Cell
The Juice Pack utilizes a safe, advanced rechargeable lithium-polymer battery cell. There is a built-in circuit to prevent the Juice Pack from shorting, overcharging, and behaving badly under extreme weather conditions.

4 Light LED Battery Status Indicator Wow!
There are 4 light LEDs on the back of the Juice Pack. Simply press the test button and it will tell you how much power is left with the Juice Pack. The LED lights also indicate the charging status and the charging progress.
